How Our Industrial Automation Services Work

Step 1 Kick-off Meeting

In this meeting, we’ll talk about your needs, potential technologies that will address them, and your definition of success. Then we’ll assign an expert(s) for your project and define their role(s) and responsibility(-ies) before starting work.

Step 2 Requirements Analysis

Our expert(s) will perform a site survey to discover any special requirements for your facility(-ies). We always recommend site surveys as a best practice of FEED (Front End Engineering Design).

Step 3 Design of Your Technology System

You’ll get an initial design of your technology systems for review and approval. Our file formats are IFC standards to ease data exchange in the construction and BIM industries.

Step 4 Construction & Testing

All our systems undergo Factory Accepted Testing (FAT) prior to shipment. We perform periodic status reporting, budget control, and MOC (Management Of Change) to mitigate risks.

Step 5 Implementation & Testing

Before commissioning, your systems undergo Site Acceptable Testing (SAT) to ensure no equipment damage occurred during shipment. Then, a field engineer(s) supervises the construction and commissioning of your systems.

Step 6 Commissioning, Training, & Support

We train your operator(s) on the use of your new system during commissioning so you can make use of it right away. And we provide support post-commissioning upon request.

What is the difference between a PLC and an RTU in an industrial automation context?

A Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is typically used for high-speed, logic-based control of equipment at a single site, such as a compressor station or processing facility. A Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) is designed for low-bandwidth, remote field locations, collecting data from sensors and actuators and communicating it to a central SCADA system, often over wireless or cellular networks. Many upstream oil and gas deployments use RTUs at wellpads and PLCs at larger facilities. CSE ICON programs and integrates both.

What is a Factory Acceptance Test (FAT), and why is it important before field deployment?

A Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) is a structured test performed at the integrator’s facility before equipment is shipped to the field, verifying that the PLC, HMI, and control logic perform as specified. Identifying issues in a controlled environment is far less costly than during remote site commissioning. CSE ICON conducts FAT on all automation systems and follows with a Site Acceptance Test (SAT) after installation to confirm system performance in the actual operating environment.

What electrical and safety standards does CSE ICON follow for industrial automation projects?

CSE ICON designs automation systems in compliance with NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code), NFPA 79 (Electrical Standard for Industrial Machinery), and ISO 9001 quality management standards. For hazardous-area classifications, we ensure that equipment selection and installation meet the appropriate requirements to protect personnel and assets from fire and electrical hazards.

Does CSE ICON work with any brand of PLC or automation hardware, or only specific vendors?

CSE ICON is vendor-agnostic regarding automation hardware. We design and program systems using components from any major manufacturer including Allen-Bradley/Rockwell, Siemens, Schneider Electric, ABB, and others, based on customer requirements, installed base, and operational preferences.

What does a typical industrial automation project engagement look like from start to finish?

A typical engagement includes five stages: (1) site survey and requirements gathering, (2) engineering design and documentation (P&IDs, loop diagrams, control narratives), (3) technology system design and approval, (4) fabrication, PLC/HMI programming, and FAT, and (5) field installation, SAT, commissioning, and operator training. CSE ICON uses IFC-standard file formats throughout to ensure compatibility with construction and BIM workflows.
